Wi-Fi Splash Pages

What is a Wi-Fi Splash Page?
A Wi-Fi Splash page is a special web page that greets a visitor when they connect to a Wi-Fi Hotspot, such as in an Internet cafe or library. Rather than just send the visitor directly to the Internet, the Splash Page appears first, allowing the Wi-Fi Hotspot provider the opportunity to message to the user.

Who could benefit from a Wi-Fi Splash Page?
Any business owner or organization that provides free or pay-for-use Wi-Fi. For example:

  • Coffee Shops
  • Internet Cafes
  • Restaurants and Bars
  • Hotels and Motels
  • Bookstores
  • Tea Houses
  • Libraries
  • Schools
  • Marinas
  • Campgrounds or RV Parks
  • Residential Communities or Condo Associations
  • Community Centers
  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Retirement Homes and Assisted Living Communities

Why should I have a Wi-Fi Splash Page?
There are several reasons you may wish to implement a Splash Page at your Wi-Fi Hotspot:

  • To require your visitors to accept a Terms of Service agreement
  • To ask your visitors for some demographic information, such as their email address, zip code, etc. You could then ask for permission to message them and/or add them to your mailing list.
  • To restrict the Web Sites that your visitors can access, ensuring that inappropriate content is not displayed at your location (ideal for schools, universities, libraries, or other public locations where children will be present)
  • To send your visitors to a specific home page, such as your business Web Site or a custom home page with specific links and helpful information
  • To sell advertising on your Splash Page that greets your visitors (perfect for monetizing your Wi-Fi location or adding it to your stable of advertising properties)
  • To greet your visitors with a Splash Page that publishes news specific to your location, such as in a Condo Association, Hotel, or Retirement Home.
  • To be able to measure the traffic on your Wi-Fi Hotspot (how many users connect, how many connect frequently, how long is the average connection?)

Is there special hardware and software that is needed for my Wi-Fi Splash Page?
In most cases, no. Your existing wireless router will work with the software program that serves your Wi-Fi Splash Page. However, if a router upgrade is needed, the cost is typically less than $100.

Are there any disadvantages to having a Wi-Fi Splash Page?
Not really. The connection speed is not affected at all, since you are merely having your users go to a certain page rather than their personal home page before browsing. In instances where we have installed the system for clients who have wished to ask for information (or asked for their visitors to accept a Terms of Service agreement) there has been acceptance and no negative feedback. Users of your wi-fi (especially if it’s FREE) are willing to go through a short step or two, or even give you their email address, in return for getting on the Internet. You shouldn’t miss out on gathering information from these customers who are sitting in your brick and mortar location!
